OLWilliams birth certificates

Gramps ID S0345

Narrative

Owen probably had a copy of his birth certificate in 1961 to get a passport to visit Canada and USA with David and Carol. (EJWilliams remembers he and LCWilliams going to Heathrow to pick them up on return. It was much less busy than nowadays!)

Why was the earlier 1921 certificate so restricted? It could be used for work or lower school purposes but not for secondary school purposes! Ah, birth certificates used to have different prices for different uses. If you went to secondary school you must have been rich so they put the price up!

The requisition for the earlier certificate was signed by Gwladys Williams (sister!) on 17 Jan 1921 at 1, Mayola Road, Clapton E5, which is still there now. She was a stenographer. But the certificate itself is dated 3rd June 1921, nearly 6 months later. Wow, and I think 7 days is bad!

Maybe he needed it for work. People could work aged 12 then, and needed the certificate to prove their age. But it does say "school purposes".
