subject Re: For the collection

I love the postcards! Let me get this straight. First, in 1912, she's writing to Walter William Buxton, who's living with his parents at 5, Holcroft Road. It's a birthday card, postmarked from Clapton on his birthday. I wonder if it was routine for postcards to be delivered the same day then? She sends a card saying she cannot meet him on his birthday. I wonder why not, since Clapton is just down the road from hackney? Wella was just 19 when she sent this. And she can actually spell her name, unlike everyone else! It's a very nice postcard and she writes enthusiastically and well.

Then a couple of months later, she becomes preganant. Wella and Walter marry, then Cyril arrives in October 1913.

Then in 1914, on the 27th of some month I can't make out, she's writing from Southend on Sea to Mrs A Buxton at the same address, and calling her Ma and Dad. "Babe's got a face quite as red as Wales". Is that what it says? Since when was Wales red? It wasn't even communist in 1914! "remember me to boy and girl". Who?
Anyway, fascinating stuff. Thanks!
Emrys

From Mike Buxton 31 mar 2009:
The first card says:

Ps may you live
to see a Hundred more

Perhaps she was able to see him

The second card is addressed to Mrs A Buxton (Annie, Walters step mother)
And reads:

Dear Ma & Dad

Enjoying our-
selves great weath
beautiful, babes got
a face quite as red
as Walls, remember
me to boys & girl

Love Wella

I guess babes would be Cyril, Wall would be Walter and boys and girl his brothers
and sister.
