UNFORTUNATELY Beren was involved in a 4 wheel driving accident some weeks ago and is now a quadriplegic in the Shenton Park Rehabilitation Hospital. He is doing really well and is in good spirits (contemplating how an electric wheelchair would go in freefall). He is happy to have visitors and if anyone is inclined the visiting hours are 8:00 am-10:00 am then 12:00 noon-2:00 pm then 4:00 pm-8:00 pm on weekdays and 8:00 am-8:00 pm Sat and Sun. He is in Ward 11 room "L". Or if you would like to send him an email his Dad is checking his account and will print them out for him (he does have his laptop with him and once they sort out some splints for his hands he will be able to use it himself). His email address is beren@etyres.com.au . Beren wanted to know how everyone was going and between physio and OT he does get a bit bored lying there, so call in or drop him an e-mail.

Crash victim lobbies for spinal funding

By Amanda James, 27 nov 2002

BEREN MARLEY hopes his pleas for help to walk again will not fall on deaf ears.

The 22-year-old, who became a quadriplegic after being involved in a car accident in April, said the possibility of a cure or an improvement in his level of disability was his greatest hope.

"A cure or some form of treatment which may allow me to regain the use of my hands is definitely not out of the question," he said.

The former computer programmer from Bassendean was at Parliament yesterday to lobby for financial assistance for spinal cord injury research in WA.

He and others want a legislative commitment to provide long-term funding to the Neurotrauma Research Program.

The program was set up in 1998 with some of its funding coming from money collected from speed and red light camera fines.

The initial commitment was for $500,000 a year for four years but no decision had been made on whether funding would continue beyond June.

Program leader Lyn Beazley said researchers hoped to start human trials to regrow spinal cords in 2005, depending on funding and approvals. Significant progress had been made towards a cure but $2 million a year for five years was needed to extend spinal regeneration work.
