Many thanks for your email and the questions.

I have tried to answer them and also added some more of my own :-

Hywel Inigo (“Bill”) was born on 08 February 1913 ( not March ! ) and died in Trowbridge on 04 August 1997.

I agree that the family left Hackney in 1916, possibly due to fear of Zeppelins or possibly due to the death of our grandfather. His absence from the 1911 census is not particularly significant as it was always hinted to me that he was an absent father for much of the time, and in any event at the time of the census he may have been undergoing treatment for, or suffering from, the alcoholism which killed him.

As far as dad’s schooling is concerned, I know it was in Merthyr but I do not have any of his school books. He never talked about his school days, so I cannot comment further on this.

My mother Norah Frances (“Fran”) was born on 27 September 1913 in Ainger Road, Primrose Hill, Camden. She was the younger daughter of Daniel & Florence Neale. They later lived at Dalebury Road, Wandsworh which I think you will remember visiting as Mum’s elder, unmarried sister lived there until 1969. In that year the sisters sold the house and my aunt, Kay, moved to a house in Woodbourne Avenue, Streatham. She died in 2000.

Mum died at Avonpark Residential Home, Limpley Stoke, Bath on 11 September 2005.

Mum and dad were married on 29 August 1939 at Wandsworth Town Hall.

I was born on 24 March 1954 in Trowbridge and married Susan Margaret, younger daughter of George & Sheila Lambert, on 09 February 1985, so our silver wedding is fast approaching ! Sue’s parents moved from Southampton to a house around the corner from us in 2001, their elder daughter lives at Hilperton on the other side of Trowbridge.

Gemma Kim was born on 26 August 1976, and subsequently adopted by me.

Llewella was the oldest of the 13 children and died young and unmarried, probably in childbirth, which is why she was never mentioned !

I agree that our aunt, May, married Jimmy Fielder and I am sure they lived at Felixtowe in Suffolk. Not sure if they had any children, and I have no recollection that she was ever known as Sarah.

New questions

Charlie Williams who married our aunt, Gladys, was always said to be a cousin of hers. This I have always doubted and thought that perhaps he had changed his name to hers. Do you know anything about this, please ?

Do you remember Alan, who was always said to be a cousin or second cousin ? I always wondered about his parentage and know only that he died relatively young in about 1982, certainly before your parents Golden Wedding in 1983. He had married Kitty, who died young of a brain tumour. Any thoughts on this, please ?
