Event Note

Bachelor Thomas was 28 and spinster Sarah 24 on 7 June 1897 when they married by certificate at Merthyr Tydfil register office. Thomas said he was a blacksmith, son of William Williams, deceased blacksmith. Sarah gave no profession, and was daughter of Edward baker, iron baller. Thomas and Sarah both signed their names. Witnesses were Edward Baker, who made a mark, and another illegible Baker who signed.

Thomas lived at 41 Gwaelodygarth Terrace, Merthyr Tydfil.
Sarah Lived at 5, Taff Street, Caepantwyll (and thanks to the wonderful Alan George website for deciphering that!) That's called Cae-pant-tywyll on current OS maps. It's not exactly clear where Taff Street or Gwaelodygarth Terrace were, but they can't have been five minutes walk apart.

Narrative

Thomas Williams is, according to the JTW inheritance letter, the brother of John Thomas Williams and son of Sarah Williams. His marriage certificate says that Thomas's father is William Williams, deceased, but that William was a blacksmith a blacksmith. The William mentioned on the putative JTW birth certificate claims to be a publican, and the William found in the 1861 census (and earlier) is an engine stoker.

Thomas also claims to be a bachelor at marriage, which is bad for the theory that he was a widower in the 1891 census.

All still very murky!
